I started making Snickerdoodles around the age of nine. They are one of my favorite cookies to make and were among the many cookies made at Christmas time for my kids.
My kids loved them so much they always requested them when they visited Grandma. They say Grandma’s are better and I can’t argue that. Some things Grandma’s just do better!
However we use the same recipe. 🙂
Ingredients
(Makes 3 1/2 to 4 dozen cookies)
- 1/2 Cup Butter
- 1/2 Cup Shortening
- 1 Cup Sugar
- 2 Eggs
- 1 tsp. Vanilla
- 2 3/4 Cup Flour
- 1 tsp. Baking Soda
- 1/4 tsp. Salt
- 2 tsp. Cream of Tartar
Topping
- 1/4 Cup Sugar
- 2 tsp. Cinnamon
In a large bowl mix butter, margarine, and sugar until creamy. Add the eggs and mix well. Stir in the vanilla.
Measure out the flour and add the salt, baking soda, and cream of tartar to the flour.
Stir together and gradually add the flour mixture to the sugar mixture.
Stir until a soft ball is formed.
Heat the oven to 400 degrees.
In a small bowl combine 1/4 C. sugar
and 2 tsp. cinnamon for the topping.
Roll the cookie dough into balls. Then roll the balls in the cinnamon sugar mixture.
Place on cookie sheet and bake for 8 to 10 minutes. ( I found pressing them down just slightly makes a more even cookie)
I have never known what a snickerdoodle was! Thanks for the recipe and the post! 😊

What is cream of tarter exactly?

It’s actually a bi-product from the wine making process. It’s used to stabilize egg whites, whipped cream, as a thickening agent, and to activate baking soda. 🙂

I’m not sure. There are many different stories of where snickerdoodles originated from.
